Firstly, it is very important to note that both short term as well as long term memmory play an integral part in the overall mental well- being. Now, let us compare these both to find out which would be the hardest to function without in daily life.
A short-term memory's conversion to long-term memory requires the passage of time, this time-dependent process of stabilization, whereby our experiences achieve a permanent record in our memory, is referred to as "consolidation." Memory consolidation can occur at many organizational levels in the brain. Systems-level consolidation, involving the reorganization of brain networks that handle the processing of individual memories, may then happen, but on a much slower time frame that can take several days or years.
Now, let us understand this with the help of examples. Knowing what we had for lunch or any activity that occured minutes or hours before the present can be considered as short time memmory. Knowing what happened in our lives or things surrounding our lives for months or years before the present is known as long time memmory.
Hence, from the above, it its clear that it would be extremely hard to function in daily life without having a short term memmmory, where to some extent, we can function without long term memmories by making notes of the important things happening in our daily life proceedings and storing them in the storage devices.
