Question
1. Using Excel, determine the length of finite sequence for the following ratios:a. 22/7
b. 1/34
c. 1/334
d. 17001001986/999999999
Note 1: The “use” of Excel should be general… that is, develop a way to use Excel to solve problems of this sort “in general”. In order to solve this “in general” you will have to understand the general nature of “fractional representation” and “decimal representation” and use Excel to investigate this. Simply typing “=22/7” cannot be considered adequate or acceptable because the number representation in Excel is fairly limited to 15 digits of representation. Thus, if a/b repeats with a length greater than 15, you will not be able to see the “length of finite sequence” simply by typing “=a/b”.
2. Suppose one wishes to develop a fractional number a/b to represent any number with a finite repeating sequence, say 125.3253253… one can multiply or divide the desired number by an appropriate power of ten and subtract off the repeating sequence. Implement this idea in Excel.
Hint: There are two Excel functions that should be helpful:
Quotient – returns the quotient of division of a/b, that is, Quotient(5,3)=1
Mod – returns the remainder of division of a/b, that is, Mod(5,3)=2
