Question

As of a few minutes ago, I have a new assignment I need your help with.

Our program is to deliver a system for the US Department of Defense. Our contract requires us to "maintain the SOI current state (i.e., "as-is") and target state (i.e., "to-be") architecture information using DOD Architecture views." It also requires "...continuous assessments regarding the alignment with other DOD architectures."

The LSE just asked me to bring her some options and a recommendation for which DODAF views would be best for our SOI development. What the heck is DOD view?

Please send me some advice in the form of two paragraphs about how to attack this problem. I would appreciate a brief discussion about what a view is and how to figure out which to produce. Also, briefly explain why our architecture needs to align with others in DOD? I don't have much time, so please limit your response to two paragraphs minimum.

I have to get the LSE her recommendation asap.

Thanks in advance for your assistance,

The Intern

Explanation / Answer

Approach to the problem

First, you should determine the SOI current state and establish what is required in the target state. You should then list the actions you and your organization has to take to achieve the target state. Further, you must study the current DOD architectures that are in use. Please make sure that the actions you take to reach the target state align with the other DOD architectures. Please note that SOI refers to service-oriented infrastructure. The SOI gives a system for IT infrastructure as a service. The target state is the state of IT infrastructure that your company must strive to reach. The SOI includes the “enterprise”, the application architecture, and the infrastructure.

The LSE has asked for DODAF views that are best for your company’s SOI development. The DODAF viewpoints are Department of Defense Architecture Framework viewpoints. These viewpoints have a particular purpose including providing broad summary information, narrowly focused information, and information about how aspects of the enterprise are connected. The DODAF viewpoints are All Viewpoint, Capability Viewpoint, Data and Information Viewpoint, Operational Viewpoint, Project Viewpoint, Services Viewpoint, Standards Viewpoint, and Systems Viewpoint. You have to study and select the Viewpoint that is best for your company. For example, if the Standards Viewpoint is appropriate for your contract, the viewpoint gives business, commercial, doctrinal standards, and technical standards applicable to your solution. This viewpoint will include the systems and services you must provide as a part of your solution. Your architecture must align with those of others in the DOD because of interoperability requirements. Project interoperability normalizes differences in architectural framework difference by describing alignment requirements for a common approach. The meets the requirements of DOD and main stakeholders.
