11.14Message Do-Over for a Bad-News Message to a Professional Contact

Bianca Genova has worked hard to make networking events for LinkedB2B more attractive to members. She developed a speaker series as one strategy to attract members to attend the events. Several months ago, she invited a prominent author and speaker, Madison Avery, to an event on September 4. On August 21, Madison sent the following note:

SUBJECT: Speaking Cancellation

Dear Bianca,

I regret to inform you that I cannot speak at your September 4 networking event. I will return the $2,000 advance that you sent me.

In the past month, I have suffered some health issues. I anticipated recovering more quickly. My doctor has advised that I avoid all travel for several months to avoid some of these problems. On top of that, my father-in-law died two weeks ago. As a result, I’ve spent most of my time attempting to help my husband deal with this tragic time. I appreciate your understanding.

Madison

At this time, 179 professionals have signed up for the event. Bianca needs to write a message to all professionals who have RSVP’d and paid for the event. She will explain that she will find a fill-in speaker on the same topic and she will offer refunds to any person who no longer wants to attend the event.

Complete the following tasks:

A.Evaluate how well Madison delivers bad news.

B.Rewrite Madison’s note to more effectively deliver bad news.

C.Assume the role of Samantha and write a message to members that delivers the bad news and also helps promote the networking event even in the absence of Madison as a speaker.

Explanation / Answer

A.Evaluate how well Madison delivers bad news.

Madison deliver the bad news as well as can be expected, she provided valid reasons for the cancellation (2 good reasons, her health issues and that a family member died recently), she also informed Bianca that she is giving back the money

B.Rewrite Madison’s note to more effectively deliver bad news.

Dear Bianca,

I would like to thank you for choosing me to speak at your prestigious event on September 4th, I´m sure it will be a great success.

However, I´m also sad to inform you I will not be able to attend and speak to your guest for 2 strong reasons.

First of all, I´m suffering a health condition that I thought I would be recover by this time but recovery is been slow and my doctor has restricted me from any traveling and speaking activity.

Second and most important reason is the passing away of my father in law, it came as a shocking and sad news to all of our family members, my husband is going through a terrible time and I need to be by his side at all times.

You will receive the money that was sent in advance to me by this afternoon.

I do appreciate your understanding on this matter

Madison.

C.Assume the role of Samantha and write a message to members that delivers the bad news and also helps promote the networking event even in the absence of Madison as a speaker.

Dear special guest,

This is a reminder that September 4th is around the corner and the LinkedB2B event is going to be a huge success with your presences.

Please do note that we recently had a change of Speakers, sadly Madison Avery will no longer be attending due to health issues (we are wishing her an speedy recovery), to fill up her spot we will have the honor to hear David West who is an expert on his area.

Please take in consideration that we are offering refunds if you are no longer instered on assinting to the event but also note that David West has a lot to teach us.

Sincerely

Bianca
