Question
Klassen Toy Company, Inc., assembles two parts (parts 1 and 2): Part 1 is first processed at workstation A for 10 minutes per unit and then processed at workstation B for 20 minutes per unit. Part 2 is simultaneously processed at workstation C for 12 minutes per unit. Work stations B and C feed the parts to an assembler at workstation D, where the two parts are assembled. The time at workstation D is 30 minutes.
a) The bottleneck of this process is workstation __,at __ minutes per unit
b) The hourly capacity of the process is
Explanation / Answer
a) The bottleneck of this process is workstation "B" ,at 20 minutes per unit
Reason: Part 1 & 2 start processing at the same time @ workstations A & C simulatenously. After 10 mins, part 1 moves to workstation B for processing for 20 min. The Part 2 has to wait for 8 mins till Part 1 finished processing of 20 mins @ workstation B, before part 1 & 2 can be assembled @ workstation D. Hence workstation B is the current bottleneck.
B) Hourly capacity of the process is - 2 units.
Processing time for part 1 is 10+20= 30 mins.
Processing time for part 2 is 12 mins
Assembly time for 1 & 2 is 30 mins. i.e. only 2 units can be assembled each hour. Hence capacity of the process is 2 units/ hour.
