Question
Jenny works with a team of seven other professionals. Linda, a team member, is a very close personal friend of the boss. With the boss’s approval, Linda took a sudden and unexpected two-week vacation to go on a cruise during the team’s most difficult month of the year. One team member, Jason, had to work 16 days nonstop, without a day off during Linda’s vacation. Other team members soon began complaining and resenting Linda for the unbearable workload her vacation caused them. A few weeks back from vacation, Linda began to notice that she was being excluded from informal luncheons and after-work gatherings. She confided in Jenny that she could not understand why everyone seemed to be mad at her. Jenny, not wanting to cause trouble, said nothing to Linda. In a group of four or five classmates, discuss the answers to the following questions:
1. If you were Jenny, what would you do? 2. What would you do if you were Linda? 3. What would you do if you were Jason? 4. What would you do if you were another team member? 5. If you were the boss and got wind of the resentment against Linda, what would you do?
Explanation / Answer
1.If I were Jenny, I would have told Linda the possible reasons behind avoidance and ask her to improve upon them.
Also, I would have talked to my teammates about this problem and told that everyone is not the same. May be she is different from all of us but avoiding her is not good if we take team spirit into account, so we should accept her as our team member and ask her to improve upon things which lead to her avoidance.
2. I would have asked my team members about the problem they have with me and would take their feedback and try to improve according to that in order to avoid any such situation later.
3. If I were Jason I would have talked to my boss that working for so long is not good and it also decreases the efficiency. So if there is any such situation later he should not give leaves to employees until there is an emergency.
4. I would have talked to boss about the situation and the problems we had to face because of the leaves taken by Linda. Also I would have taken stand for Jason that he had to work for 16 days continuously.
5. Being a boss I would have called a meeting of all the team members and told them that there are genuine reasons behind the leaves taken by Linda and would also ask them to cooperate with Linda. Also I would ask the team members about the reasons that led to her avoidance and told Linda to improve upon according to the feedback.
