Question

There are just two questions on this exercise. Each involves in solving a critical Data Center problem and hopefully returning your Data Center and your Data Center Staff to a normal safe and productive state of operations. You may answer each in the form of a bulleted or numbered checklist, or in the form of paragraphs. These questions are designed to understand your learning and thinking about Data Centers. As you answer these questions, think like a Leader who is determined to be successful and represent and protect the best interests of your management and your company’s reputation.

In each of these questions you are the newly hired Data Center Operations Manager of the Microsoft Chicago Cloud Data Center in North Lake, IL.

While walking through one of your 12,000 square foot colo rooms on the second floor of your Data Center you get a phone call from Redmond Global Data Center Operations that informs you that have lost network and Internet contact with your entire Data Center. They are concerned that Chicagoland has suffered a catastrophic attack. What will you do?

Answer:

Prior to the completion of the construction build-out of your Data Center, while walking through one of your 12,000 square foot colo rooms on the second floor of your Data Center you have discovered an unauthorized person who is not an employee or Microsoft contractor, and they are taking unauthorized pictures. You ask them for their credentials and they say they are there as the guest of one of your contracting services firms, yet they have no badge or credentials to establish this fact. Furthermore, you immediately step away and call the managing director of the call the contracting services firm, and they explain that they know of no such person. So this person has lied and they are trespassing. Your own management will want an explanation and will hold you accountable for the security of the facility. What will you do?

Explanation / Answer

1) For any organization disaster recovery planning must be present. In the case mentioned above, data may get lost due breaking of connection as the network and internet both are lost.

So, in case of such catastrophic attack, a process for the recovery of the systems and data should be run as soon as possible. Some measures should be taken at this point to preserve organization's technology and information.

By having remote catastrophic recovery location that produce backups on regular basis, we can deal with such situations with minimal loss. Some of the strategies for the data protection include:

1) backups made to tape and sent off-site at regular intervals

2) backups made to disk on-site and automatically copied to off-site disk, or made directly to off-site disk.

3) The use of high availability systems which keep both the data and system replicated off-site, enabling continuous access to systems and data, even after a disaster (often associated with cloud storage)

4) Hybrid Cloud solutions that replicate both on-site and to off-site data centers. These solutions provide the ability to instantly fail-over to local on-site hardware, but in the event of a physical disaster, servers can be brought up in the cloud data centers as well.

5) Private cloud solutions which replicate the data into storage domains which are part of private cloud setup.

6) replication of the data to an off-site location, which will restore the data, often makes use of storage area network(SAN)

So, in case the above scenario occurs, first aim of the person should be take the systems back online and recovery of data.

2) In the above case, as the person was clicking pictures, so you can take the person's device and ask him/her to delete the whatever data he/she has collected from the place.

As you are responsible for the security of that place, you can sue the person for the tort of trespass.

If a person is trespassing, we can warn the person that he or she is trespassing and that you will call the police if he or she does not leave. if the person still refuses to leave, the person commits an offence against the Act.

Since, in the above case, the person has no proof that he/she not trespassing, so you can send a legal notice stating to "stay off" from the mentioned location to prevent future trespassing.
