Question
1. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of telework in balancing work-family demands. OP: Research has shown there are both negative and positive results from teleworking. Telework is using any form of technology, computers or telecommunications to substitute for working from the office. Working from home is the most known and widely used form of telework. Telework can save organizations time, money and reduce employee turnover. This type of work helps employees manage a work-life balance. The positive effects for the employee include flexibility control, dependent care and home relationships. The negative effects are role overload, workaholism, blurring of boundaries between work and family and the negative impact on relationships at home including child care (Modaff, Butler, & DeWine, 2017) Telework can help balance work-family life. The flexibility allows employees to take care of their family's needs during the workday. It also gives the employee control of when to work, this lack of constraint helps relieve stress. Dependent care is made easier because the employee can take care of dependent family members while working remotely. Often home relationships improve because interaction is increased with family members throughout the day and not limited to after work hours. The negative effects of telework are closely tied to the positive aspects. A person can experience role overload when they have to switch between the demands of home and work. Workaholism becomes a problem because employees overwork trying to prove that working from home is a good arrangement. Some employees have trouble with boundaries and the lines between work and home become blurry. They no longer can leave work or family behind, they are intermixed. This can also lead to a negative impact on relationships at home (Modaff, Butler, & DeWine, 2017). (290) ReplyExplanation / Answer
