In this Sputnik age, computer networks are indispensable. Computer networks is a paradigm of organisation of computer systems that merge the domain of communications and computers. The two are so intertwined these days that it is difficult to draw a line between the tools to process & store information and the tools to transport information. It is only through the computer networks that a free flow of information be maintained.
Computer networks are inevitable for the success of a manager. They allow the managers to access information faster , sitting at even a remote location. Instead of having separate infrastructure for documents , a central repository can hold the documents. This simplifies the organisation of information. Instead of transferring the data to a device and then walking to a co-worker’s desk and asking them to transfer the files from the device to their computers, one can in real time track the information. Besides , if there are changes in the file at the central repository, everyone can update the information within no time. This also prevents the problem of creating isolated backups.
The manager can also put access permissions on who has access to the information instead of physically putting the requisite infrastructure for the same. In this way prevention of access to sensitive data can be managed.
Managers can save a lot of cost for the enterprise through sharing of office equipment. There is no need to have separate printers, scanners or fax machine. We can just install one and share it through computer networks. One can share the internet connection provided by the internet service providers. This would further save the expenditure.
One can access various files and multimedia, which you store remotely on other machines or network-attached storage devices, thus increasing storage capacity.
There are certain software that supports multiple devices through one subscription. So the manager need not buy individual licenses for each computer. In a computer network, as the machines are connected to each other, it saves time and money upgrading each computer system.
Be it placing orders or passing information to the accountant , computer networks are a must.Today businesses of all kinds use inventory management. Retail and wholesale businesses rely heavily on computer networks. It is through this that they order the requisite amount when stocks get low. This allows them the elbow room, not to carry too much or too little of any item and save the amount spent on manpower require to manage much of the supply chain.
Presentations and reports are mostly delivered through webinars and it is here that networks help. This provide them the ability to track the progress of a project. Email is used for making contact and transacting business not only with the customers, client, vendors and business partners, but also internally inside the organisation. Internet enabled computing allows the business to receive orders, communicate with external stakeholders and manage business.
For geographically dispersed businesses, computer networks allow managers benefits like standardising, accounting and managing operations. It also helps reducing errors and improving the consistency as everyone works from a single source of information. It helps them keep track of revenues, costs and their supply chain from a central location. This helps them to have a macro-view of the enterprise and assists in making decisions.
Communication between employees is handled in-person most of the time in a smaller business that operates from a single location. The employees can speak and interact directly with the executives as the offices could be only a few steps away. As the companies grow in size, most of the communication takes place over large distances assisted by the computer networks. The co-workers work remotely on the same project and share information without meeting each other in person.
To sum up, the computer networks offer a plethora of advantages like enhancing the productivity (by using connectivity and sharing of information) and that is the reason they are popular these days.
