Question
The IT instructors at Superior Technical College are planning to use virtual machines in a windows server 2016 course. the course is divided into four units, with several activities planned for each unit. Students' virtual machines are checked and graded at the end of each unit. The problem is that errors made in early units could make it difficult to perform certain tasks in later units. Create a short report explaining how instructors could use a combination of snapshots and linked clones so that students can have a new virtual machine for each unit of the class.
Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Using Snapshot and linled clones on virtual machines -
Virtual machines are like a independent machine on your original host machine. When some task is processed on a virtual machine then it's current state and property is modified and virtual machine enters in a new state. While working on virtual machines maby tasks and activities are performed on the virtual machines and virtual machines have many states with respect to the performed activities. So there are many tasks performed before to reach a desired state. It is sometimes required to revert a machine to the previous state immediately. The virtual machine provide tools to snapshot and cloning.
Snapshot - Snapshots is the image of the current state of the virtual machine which is recorded for the future reference. There are many activities performed to reach a new state of the virtual machine so it is better to take a picture of the current state. If anything happens wrong in the future then it used to load the previous state of the machine. Therefore, the snapshot is a picture of the current state of the virtual machine.
Cloning - Clone of a virtual machine is copy of that virtual machine. If many virtual machines are nedded for different activities or configuration then it is needed to clone the actual state of the virtual machine and perform the respective activities that are unique on respective virtual machine. There is two types of cloning one is lonked clone and other is full clone.
Linked clone copy the virtual machine only with the modification. And full clone copy the full image of the virtual machine. Linked clone is efficient as it required the less disk space to store only the modification made in the virtual machine.
Using the combination of snapshot and linked cloning -
While working on the virtual machines a lot of activities are performed and go through the different states. If some thing goes wrong in the later state then it is required to load the previous state of the virtual machine immediately to start work from the correct state. This requires the cloning and snapshot of the virtual machine. In a virtual machine the snapshot manager allows to save a snapshot of the current state of the virtual machine. The snapshot manager asks for a description and some information regarding the current state. A correct description should be entered for future reference. During the work if another virtual machine is required for testing some other configurations then a clone is created. A linked clone stores the modifications made to the virtual machine. The clone behaves like a new virtual machine on which new activities can be performed.
Therefore with keeping the snapshot and clone, it is easy to correct the errors happens in the virtual machine while working on them. If somethimg happens wrong in the current activity or configuration then it can be reverted and load the virtual machine to the previous state using Snapshot. And new configuration can be tested by cloning the virtual machine.
So it is the better to use the snapshot and cloning in the given way described above to work efficiently on the virtual machines and keep it in the correct state.
