According to our textbook, collaborative consumption is “an economic model based on sharing, swapping, trading, or renting products and services” (Rainer, 279). Collaborative consumption is becoming a “green phenomenon” because more people are sharing more goods rather than buying new ones and tossing out the old items. For example, car sharing business allow people to share rides or cars, instead of having their own car or driving alone. This helps reduce the pollution in the air, especially in big cities. Another example of collaborative consumption would be Airbnb. Airbnb allows people to rent out their homes, spare rooms or basements to travelers. This allows the renters to make some extra cash and the rentees to save some money by not staying at an expensive hotel. Airbnb keeps the rates low and carries out their motto, “Book unique homes and experience a city like a local.” (Airbnb.com).

Explanation / Answer

The concept of collaborative consumption comes into existence in the time where sustainability is the answer for all economic and social survival across the globe. Enough of abuse has already been caused to the Environment by tapping the natural resources to a greater extent than desirable that is resulting into the melting of the glaciers, rise in the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and the overall greenhouse effect in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing the planet to be warmer than the earlier generations. In such a scenario, the concepts like Collaborative consumption is rather a blessing in disguise because it attempts to take a small step in dealing with the issues of environmental concerns and thereby rendering its bit in the contribution to making this world a sustainable world to live in. Airbnb has rather come with an innovative concept of renting personal homes to the travelers. It is welcome initiative that has been widely appreciated by the travelers who feel homely in a new place with pocket-friendly experiences that enable them to travel across the cities without causing much harm the Environment because more the people start renting these houses, lesser the requirements of the expensive hotels, construction of which, adds to land and air pollution otherwise in response to the traveler’s needs. Therefore, with more concepts of collaborative consumption giving way to building of new projects in terms of constructing a building, manufacturing of cars, etc., we are all contributing our bit to the environment.
