Question
1. Identify an Upcoming Negotiation Situation You Will Face - Consider an upcoming situation in which you will need to negotiate (for a raise, deciding upon a family vacation destination, making a large purchase such as a car or a home, etc.), and create a BATNA by following the steps. 2. Create a list of at least five actions you might conceivably take if no agreement is reached. 3. Convert the best three actions into practical alternatives (i.e.How will you apply the alternatives you’ve chosen to the situation?) 4. Select one of the three alternatives as the best one. This is your BANTA. Why did you choose it? What is the best outcome for you?
Explanation / Answer
Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) is an approach applied in situation where agreement is not reached by negotiation. In-fact BATNAs are considered as the greatest source of power in a negotiation.
I am taking an example of one such common family situation. The situation is being brought up in a middle class family. After completion of my studies I have recently stated working and earning well. Now that I have saved enough to make the down payment, I wish to buy a car of my choice. However, ours is a conservative joint family and every members opinion matters.
I am creating a BATNA for the above situation:
In this situation where we are not reaching any agreement. The best option is to create BATNA as it is the only standard which can protect us from rejecting the terms that would be of interest and accepting terms that are unfavorable.
1. List of at five actions that might conceivably be taken if no agreement is reached is as follows:
2. Converting the best three actions into practical alternatives:
By visiting different bike dealers and choosing a bike of our choice and convenience.
We should keep on going to our work by bus, metros and cabs.
We should keep in contacts of the relevant cab services, so that they can be approached whenever required.
3. Selecting one of the three alternatives as the best one.
I choose that we should go for an expensive bike rather than a car.
I chose this alternative because, I find it convenient to travel in self owned locomotive rather than a rented vehicle. The best outcome from this BATNA is that I should invest my savings as per my convenience and liking.
