1.From the experience in Mexico Wal-Mart understood that the strategies should be designed according to the demand and shopping behavior of the customers to be successful in the new markets. Wal-mart succeeded in Mexico by giving importance to the local demands. They tried to understand the interest and shopping behavior of local people and employed local managers who can understand the culture and preferences of the people. Offering the products at low price, building small stores that people can walk into and offering more fresh products helped them to succeed the Mexican market. Wal-Mart also learned that it is easy to establish business strategies when there is less competition in the market. The consumer strategies changes with change in culture and some markets prefer quality of merchandise over discount offered. Due to the high competition and quality demands over discount strategy, Wal-Mart was not able to succeed in European market and the products offered did not match the interests of consumers. But Wal-Mart has made necessary changes in its business environment and designing product mix to match the requirements in China and it helped them to achieve great success in Chinese markets.
2. Mexico is a developing nation and Germany and South Korea are developed nations. According to the Mexican culture, the people of Mexico prefer buying fresh products at local stores while buying items like fish and Mexican bread and pastries like tortillas and pan dulce. The reason behind the behavior is the lack of large refrigerators in most of the houses. But in Germany and South Korea the people are rich and can store items for long time. Hence they prefer buying frozen products also. Most of the Mexicans do not have cars and hence do not prefer buying in large quantities. But the people in Germany and South Korea prefer buying in bulk. Mexicans prefer buying products with lower cost but German and South Korean customers prefer high quality products than low cost products. There is not much competition in Mexican markets but companies face strong competition in German and South Korean markets.
Wal-Mart could develop low price and product strategies that fit the Mexican markets and the discount strategy was the major element in determining the success in Mexican market. But the developed nation people are more concentrated on quality of the product and are less attracted by discount strategies.There are lot of firms that offer high quality products in Germany and South Korea and this made the Wal-Mart strategies fail in these countries.
3. Wal-mart understood the importance of the support from government and political parties in entering the international market which made them to develop strategies to embrace unions in China. Unions are major part of Chinese industries and they have good influence in organization’s success as well as the government.
