Question

A value curve plots multiple metrics that are important for your target customers (i.e. price, ease of use, speed, accuracy) with the low-high measures for competitors and yourself. By examining the existing and expected competitive offerings, you can analyze which metrics to modify in order to create a new value curve analysis. Virtual reality is still a very small market but that's not stopping many tech companies from investing lots of time and money to bring new VR tech to market. Since the market for the industry is small, there currently is not a need for mass production, which may save a lot of initial manufacturing cost in terms of capital intensity. Virtual reality is a new and emerging market, so the firm concentration is low because there are not that many competitors. The average firm size is also very small because there isn’t enough motivation due to the lack of research and development of virtual reality devices. There have four metrics. 1. Metrics should be easy to understand and use. 2. Metrics should be easily replicated. 3. Metrics should provide useful, actionable information that impacts the business. 4. Packaging. What new factors can you create? Based on the new factors you have discussed, how would you rate the metrics per competitor?

Explanation / Answer

The new factors that i would create would be

Compatibility : The problem with most VR devices is that they are operating system and or hardware specific in nature. Oculus Rift works with most devices like Xbox PS4 and laptops but it does not work with all smartphones. The VR gear designed for smartphones does not work with laptops. Xbox and PS4s. VR experience should be a lot like the LED or the LCD tv sets. where consumers should be able to use it with any interface, operating system and hardware.

Reduced Motion Sickness : VR has been known to cause a mild degree of headache and dizziness due to motion sickness. This normally happens when there's a lag between our eye movements, our head movements and the movements of scenes within the VR headset. While some VR headsets are trying to revolutionise this by having stablizers and gyroscopes found in smartphone cameras to reduce this effect, it isn't completely diminished. This problem poses another metrics that VR headsets should be rated on.

Adaptability : Every person's vision is different. Which means that the VR headset needs to adapt and compensate for people who use the headset with contact lens or prescription glasses. The degree of adaptability to different degrees of power of the human eye and eye wear is another major component on which it should rated on the value curve.
