Question

(Chapter 6) Compare the two deployment strategies presented in Chapter 6 in terms of their costs and complexity.

(Chapter 6) When a VM image is deployed to VMs, the image may contain only one single servive or multiple services via the lightweight container technology (i.e., one service per container and multiple containers per VM). These two options for packaging services are illustrated in Figure 6.6 on p.112. Discuss advantage and disadvantage of these two packaging options.

(Chapter 7) Explain why monitoring under continuous changes such as in DevOps and cloud
environment is difficult. This is mentioned in a couple of places in Chapter 7 and you only need to summarize them to avoid long answer.

(Chapter 7) We have compared agent-based with agentless monitoring in Chapter 7. For more reading of this topic to understand pros and cons of each, please visit the sites below before
answering questions 4.1 ~ 4.3:

Question (4.1) Which of agent-based and agentless is more bandwidth (or network traffic)
efficient? Explain.

Question (4.2) What monitoring tools or products each of the above sites is promoting?
Is each agentless or agent-based?

Question (4.3) Which of the two sites talks about a hybrid approach of agentless and
agent-based monitoring?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 4.1

Agentless Monitoring systems consume more bandwidth as the raw data collected needs to be transferred to the external data collection system/workstaion through the network.

Agent-Based monitoring is efficient in terms of network traffic as all the data is collected and monitored on the local machine/system/workstation.

Ans 4.2

Site (a) depicts the the advantages and disadvantages of both agent based & agentless tools, and describes the usecases when to use which of the monitoring tools. It also advertises AppPerfect Agentless Monitor as a new generation of monitoring tools that supports range of services like server monitoring, database monitoring, transaction monitoring, network monitoring, log monitoring etc.

Site (b) is promoting the use of combination of agent based & agentless monitoring tools to achieve the requirements in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

Ans 4.3

Site (b) talks about about the hybrid approach of using agent based & agentless monitoring tools together, in order to achieve maximum resource & cost optimization, and better performance.
