You have been actively recruiting nurses to fill the staffing needs of the new Cardiac Surgery Unit. With the pressure to hire very evident, you have primarily been checking to see if the nurses are currently registered in state by the Board of Nursing and if they have the experience and desire to work in such a stressful unit. One of the responsibilities of the cardiac surgery nurse is to ensure that proper drugs are obtained from the hospital pharmacy and stored in a locked cabinet in the unit Many of these drugs are narcotics and are considered to be a controlled substance. Among them are Morphine, Demerol and Codeine. During a routine check of the drugs, it was found that some of the drugs were missing. After a thorough investigation it was concluded that the drugs had been removed by an employee that had a key to the drug cabinet. Only the new nurses had keys to the drug cabinet A few days later, you were approached by Diane Stevens, an aspiring administrator and a close friend of yours. She told you in confidence that she suspected that Carla Scott had stolen the drugs. She described Carla as an individual who in high school was "into the drug scene." Carla has also associated with an undesirable crowd and had evidently maintained many of her friendships. During the past few days, Carla was observed stocking the drug cabinet. (This information was correlated with the drug transfer slips that must be signed whenever someone handles the drugs.) In fact, three nurses in the unit had noticed that Carla often, met her friends in the parking lot during breaks and was handing them small glass vials. Armed with this information, you set up a meeting with Carla Scott. Carla was informed of the purpose of the meeting and was asked to answer the accusations. Carla had nothing to say except that she had done nothing wrong but felt that she could no longer work at the hospital because of the way she was being treated. She picked up her personal items and left the hospital. Acting of a hunch, you called other area hospitals to see if they had ever employed Carla, and if so in what capacity and why she had left. Two hospitals, not identified on Carla's application, had employed Carla, but they stated that she resigned over a private matter. When asked if she was dismissed because of drug use they stated "no comment." Questions What are the problems of this case? 2. 3. 4. What in your opinion is the major problem of this case? Explanation / Answer

The problem in this case is the theft of medicinal drugs from the cabinet which is done by an employee which has the key to cabinets, the other problem is in the hiring process of the new nurses as it is done in a hurry the background employee verification is missing, leading to hiring even those employees who have a bad employment record. The major in this case is that since the hiring was done on the immediate basis the employee verification could not be done, which lead to hiring of defaulters into the organization. Carla had slipped through the background information by simply quitting her job herself ,as she is no longer associated with the organization one cannot harm her. The most important step to be taken into consideration while analysing the Carla’s case ,other employees and future applicants is that to conduct a employee verification process before the joining the employees which would ensure that no such employee is getting associated with organization which can harm the organization in the future. One individual cannot be blamed for this situation as it can be anyone who can do such wrong things ,while one has to make the hiring process more reliable so that no defaulters in future are admitted into the organization. If Carla would have maintained her innocence and would have refused to quit than it is justified to carry on an investigation which will reveal true facts about Carla.
