Question

1) For the following computing units: {bit, byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, MHz, GHz, RPM, bps} find one information quantity that is quantified/measured by each one.

2)For a given CPU, the cycle latency for the a set of operations are given as follows:

-Addition:         4

-Subtraction:     8

-Multiplication: 64

-Division:         128

If the CPU clock of this CPU runs at 2048 MHz, find the following

a) How many operations of each of the list above can this CPU perform in 5 minutes.

b) If we have 1024M of each operation in the list, compute the required time in seconds to execute all operations.

3) Assuming a capacity of a RAM chip is 1MB, its physical dimensions are 1”x4” and it costs $1,000,000 to build a production facility to produce this chip. According to Moore’s and Rock’s laws compute the new capacity and the cost to produce the new chip 32 years from today.

4) What is the fundamental problem of Von Neumann model? Discus –briefly three attempts to improve upon it.

5) Given the following java instructions, use the block diagram of Von Neumann model to trace the machine execution cycle for the given instructions.

a) k = 11 + 99;

b) z = y / x;

c) a = b || false;

Explanation / Answer

1.

The bit is a basic computing unit of information used in digital communications. It has only 2 possible values ( 0,1 ). bit, as a unit is used to represent/quantify Binary Numbers.

A byte is that computing unit that is used to represent a character such as a typography symbol, letter or alphabet.

Kilobytes are used to measure/specify the size of small data files. Consider a plain text file, this is approximately 10KB of data

The megabyte (MB) is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. MB is often used to specify/quantify the wirless newtork or wi-fi speeds.

A gigabyte (GB) is a unit to measure data storage capacity that is roughly equivalent to 1 billion bytes. gigabyte (GB) is used to quantify/measure the sizes of RAM.

A terabyte (TB) is a measure of computer storage ie. 2 to the 40th power, or approximately a trillion bytes. Storage capacities of external HardDisks are measured in terms of terabytes (TB).

The megahertz (MHz) is a unit, used for measuring frequency of alternating current. megahertz is also used to express microprocessor clock speed.

The gigahertz (GHz) is used as a quantifier/measurer of the frequency of ultra-high-frequency (UHF) and microwave signals

Revolutions per minute (RPM) is used to measure of the frequency of rotation. It is used as a measure of rotational speed of a mechanical component.

Basis point (BPS) is a unit of measurement for interest rates and other percentages in finance industry.
