SHOW ALL WORK FOR THE QUESTIONS ASKED! WHEN IT SAYS CREATE A CHART, DO CREATE A CHART! AND WHEN IT SAYS TO EXPLAIN AN ANSWER, EXPLAIN THAT ANSWER! ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS ASKED IN GREAT DETAIL!
Your company has developed a remote sensor that can "sniff" the surrounding air for evidence of wood smoke and has a thermal imager that can sense unusual heat emissions. The Forest Service is very interested in your product but insists that the sensor be 3 years maintenance free, including the combination solar/battery power supply. Your engineers have performed an accelerated life test on 8 sensors with the following results.
- 1 unit failed at 5,200 hours
- 1 unit failed at 8,200 hours
- 1 unit failed at 11,600 hours
- 1 unit failed at 19,200 hours
- 4 units successfully completed the 3-year accelerated life test.
1. Determine the failure rate and MTBF for the sensor
2. Did you successfully meet the Forest Service requirements?
Explanation / Answer
Part 1)
- 1 unit failed at 5,200 hours
- 1 unit failed at 8,200 hours
- 1 unit failed at 11,600 hours
- 1 unit failed at 19,200 hours
Total hours in 3 years = 3*365*24 = 26,280 hours
Total time the sensors were operational or the total operating hours = 5200+8200+11600+19200+4*26280 = 148,320 hours
Failure rate (?) = Number of failures / Total hours of operation = 4 / 148320 = 268 * 10-8 failures per hour
Mean Time Between Failures = 1/? = 1/ 0.0000268 = 37, 330 hours
Part 2)
As per the above calculation the MTBF is 37330 hours, which is significantly higher than the stipulated 3 years maintenance free service (i.e. 26280 hours) . Hence , the forest service requirement is successfully met.
