Question

The scrum team's velocity remains very stable, averaging 20 story points per iteration (sprint). They have about 200 story points' worth of functionality left in their backlog for this release. However, in each iteration (sprint), they have been discovering there is about 10 percent more work than anticipated, consisting of change requests, technical debt reduction, and new functionality. The product owner would like to know how many more iterations (sprints) it will take before the release will be done.

Explanation / Answer

Here average velocity is 20 points per sprint.

Story points in backlog is 200 points. So ideally it should be 10 sprints but as given about 10 percent more work is discovered which means about 2 points are not reached in each sprint which makes is approx. 18 points achieved in each sprint and this make around 12 sprints needed to finish the work before release.
