Certainly, a top-down hierarchy delivers benefits. Still, J&J reasoned that centralization reduces the magic cast by entrepreneurial drive, close customer contact, and agile decision-making. Shortening chains of command, increasing spans of responsibilities, and breaking down boundaries in a decentralized organization gives everyone a strong sense of ownership of action and accountability for outcomes.

Johnson and Johnson nailed this. Along with maintaining global integration , it managed to give sufficient autonomy to its local subsidiaries. The company operates in 60 countries and is headquartered in USA , but more than half of its revenue is dervied from outside of USA. The company used the power of decentralisation to allow the subsidiaries to mould as per the customer demands and the local culture. It also helps in increasing the enterpreneural spirit and boosts profits as employees start taking ownership of the work. But this also comes with an issue. More the decentralisation , more is the cost incurred for coordination and support. The company ensured that different self directed councils meet frequently to share ideas. Both global and local perspectives should be taken into consideration into decision making and communication channels should be smooth. The company centralised certain activities which are common to all business units to ensure standardisation. The company also maintains a credo which helps it to identify whom to care about and what should be the priority.The company ensures that employees understand the credo and also conducts a survey to understand that the credo is fitting in the environment they work.

3)Thw credo should also put the concern of shareholders into picture. Their needs also require to be addressed. Although they should not be as prioritised as that of customers but their needs should not be completely cornered as well.
