Question

Over the past decade we have seen an unprecedented demand for transferring large amounts of data via the Internet that requires high speed performance such as streaming media and Voice over IP communications. A few Internet service providers were quick to provide the infrastructure required for such applications and now are in a very lucrative position to gain from this control. This has manifested in what you know today as Net Neutrality and is something that you, as IT professionals, must be aware of and be monitoring. Please read the article: U.S. telecom: Pricing war, net neutrality woes, and respond to the following: • What impact can Net Neutrality have on how we manage residential and commercial networks? • Why is it so important for IT professionals to understand and monitor this topic?

Explanation / Answer

Dear Student,

Here are the answers...

What impact can Net Neutrality have on how we manage residential and commercial network...

Net neutrality is an idea which tells that all the traffic on the interent should be treated equally. There should not be any classification of data flowing over the interent.

Net neutrality implies an open-Internet atmosphere which will prohibit ISPs, especially telecom and cable TV operators, from discriminating against applications.

The impact of net neutrality will affect the business of many ISP's because they are liable to make some profit by regulating the traffic over internet, becuase they have invested a lot for building the infrastuctre of internet.

The impact of net neutrality on managing of residential and commercial networks..

Lets take an example...

Suppose an ISPs might want to give preferential treatment to certain types of data at certain times. For instance, ISP may want to prioritise youtube traffic at peak evening viewing times, to make sure their residential customers get a smooth, unbroken experience.

Unlike ISP may want to prioritise VoIP (voice over internet protocol ) i.e skype or some other type of VoIP application traffice during office hours, so business customers get a seamless experience when they need it most.

So here ISP is classifying the data, and by doing this he is regulating its commercial and residential customers.

The ISPs have been discriminating against several web-based content and applications. Content developers thus have to pay heavy sums to ISPs for accelerated data transfer.

If net neutriality implented there will impact over the business of ISPs provider. The business will slow down and profit will be less.

Why is it so important for IT professionals to understand and monitor this topic?

As an IT professional it is very important to understand and monitor this topic becuase you are a professional and some day you will be an entrepreneur. If you're a consumer, there's nothing in the way of you accessing your favorite sites and getting your favorite content.
