Q: As a supplier, what characteristics of a buyer (your potential customer) would be considered extremely important in building a long-term relationship? Please list at least two and provide your reasons.

A: As a supplier, I would want to create and maintain a healthy relationship with my buyers. This is largely because these buyers will be my main source of income and profitability. One thing I would look at is their business history and following. I would want to ensure that the buyer has enough customers or potential customers to keep their business running. This, in turn, affects me and my business. When researching their business history, I would look at their credit history and the amount of debt they have. The second thing I would consider is their reputation. I would want them to be honest and loyal. I would want to know that they will abide to our contracts and have a positive reputation. I would keep this in mind, because they could possibly bring in other buyers for my business.

Q: What would you describe as some of the do’s and don’ts of team leadership? Now, describe a time when you were part of a team led by a leader who practiced the do’s. What was your and the team’s experience? Conversely, describe a time when you were part of a team led by a leader who practiced the don’ts. How did your and the team’s experience differ from that of the team that was led by the leader who led by practicing the do’s? Which team performed better?

A: The do’s for a team leader would be to create a positive atmosphere that encourages communication and empowers all team members to participate. Team members should feel that their contribution is valued. The leader should provide a clear direction for the team and engage all team members in decision making, so he can get their commitment when setting goals. The leader should provide a schedule with goals that need to be achieved at specified dates, and make team members accountable for meeting these goals. Leaders should lead by example and go the extra mile to show their commitment to the team. The don’t for a leader would be not to encourage communication, not setting goals, not setting a positive atmosphere that leads to trust, and not managing conflict.  

I was part of a team in a prior semester where the leader practiced the do’s of team leadership. Each week, the team had to turn in a case analysis about a given topic. The leader engaged all team members to set a date when all members would meet online to work on the project. It was expected of each team member to be prepared and contribute towards the project. The leader encouraged all team members to participate and to provide their ideas and input. The ideas of each team member were considered and thus members felt empowered and valued. I think the leader did a great job in creating a positive environment that lead to team cooperation.    

I was part of a team at work where the leader practiced the Don’ts. The leader just gave orders to team members on what to do. When a team member had an idea, it was immediately turned down. I think the leader felt the ideas of other members as a personal criticism of his leadership. The leader would not encourage trust among team members, for he often engaged in gossip about team members that lead to distrust. As a result, team morale was very low. Everyone just did the minimum and lacked concerned about helping other team members. It was a very dysfunctional team.

But in the modern context, supplier-buyer relationship is transforming and becoming more collaborative in nature due to the fact that now alignment in the supply chain is an important way to gain competitive advantage. As a supplier, it is imperative to create and maintain a healthy relationship with the buyers. This is largely because these buyers will be the main source of income and profitability for the supplier. One important factor to consider is their business history and following. It should be ensured that the buyer has enough customers or potential customers to keep their business running. When researching their business history, the supplier should also look at their credit history and the amount of debt they have. The second thing to consider is their reputation. The buyer should be honest and loyal so that they will abide to contracts and have a positive reputation. The characteristic of a buyer that would be considered extremely important for sustaining a long-term relationship is cultural fit. The values and work culture of the buyer should match that of the supplier. Another important factor is the flexibility that the buyer provides to the supplier so that the supplier can respond to change in orders with agility. The above-mentioned factors should be kept in mind because they could possibly bring in other buyers for the supplier’s business.

The leader should provide a schedule with goals that need to be achieved at specified dates, and make team members accountable for meeting these goals. Communication is the most crucial thing a successful team leader should do and communication works both ways. Not only talking to the team members is required, but listening to them is also important. Leaders should lead by example and go the extra mile to show their commitment to the team.

Moreover, a leader must not have a procrastinating nature where he delays tasks for handling in the future. A good team leader is not expected to be a procrastinator.
