Question

Arranging in excel filtering data

Hi, so I'm having trouble in trying to arrange my data using filtered data. So for example, in my case I have a list of:

I would like to arrange this by its own state. So like Alaska first, and then California, then Nevada, and so on, cuz right now the states are all mixed and not rganized. It doesn't have to be alphabetical. How do I do this, considering that the state is after a comma.

Any suggestion will be appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Explanation / Answer

This is just one of several limitations caused by having more than a single data item stored in a single cell. The easiest & most effective approach [IMO] is to separate the data into separate (in this case 2) columns.

Select the entire range of data, then go to Data> Text to Columns. In step 1 confirm that Delimited is the selected option. In the 2nd step tick the box for Comma, then click Finish -- there's no need to do anything in step 3 unless you want the result to be put in a different pair of columns.

Once the data is separated into 2 columns you can just right-click in the "state" column & select Sort> Ascending.
