Question

Giving an order to a list of numbers

In cells T32:T54, I have a list of 23 numbers always in descending order but which could contain duplicates.

eg.

53   47   41   36   36   25   20   18   18   10   0   0   0

I want to be able to put a 'placing' on these numbers but when it comes across a duplicate, to duplicate the 'placing'

The formula I currently use is

P32:   1

P33:   =IF(T32=T33,P32,P32+1)

P34:   =IF(T33=T34,P33,P33+1)

through to

P54:   =IF(T53=T54,P53,P53+1)

But this gives results of 1 2   3 4 4 5 6 7 7 8 9 9 9

How can I get this to read 1 2 3 4 4 6 7   8   8 10 10 10

In other words, to duplicate the placing if there is an equal value, but to then skip a number because otherwise this would not give an accurate reading.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

Try this formula in cell P32 and copy down

=RANK(T32,$T$32:$T$43)

Hope this helps.
