Question
The website that advertises, but does not sell retail yet, for a company has taken off with offices in hundreds of cities, and your uncle wants to start selling PJs online. The company does not want to use a hosting company, but to have their own server(s) installed. The server hardware has already been purchased. A separate company is providing the sales database and credit card charging, so these features are not needed for the in-house server. Based on the knowledge you have, and additional information from the internet, make a recommendation on:
How the server should be connected to the internet.
Which operating system and associated software to choose and why. (What questions should be asked to select from Windows/IIS or Linux/Apache.)
What set up needs to be done to prepare the server for both development of the new web site and for production access.
Your recommendation/answer should be no fewer than 700 words.
Explanation / Answer
1) The same way your computer is connected to the internet right now.. but a server is usually connected to a very reliable/highspeed line. You can turn your machine into an easy webserver if you have MacOS X by going into system preferences>sharing>and check the "Personal WebSharing" box. Now you will be able to go to your IP address (can be found under the network in system preferences) in a web browser and an apache website will popup. This website can be acessed by ANYONE in the world with an internet connection, all they have to do is put your IP address into the browser, Apache is extremely powerful web server software that well over 60% of all web servers in the world use. You can replace that default apache website with your own website by going into your hard drive>library>webserver>documents, then delete all the files in there and replace them with your own website. Please be advised that your webserver will only work when booted up and connected to the internet. If you would like to have a domain name such as www.macrumors.com; first you need to register the name with a registrar such aswww.godaddy.com and then make a DNS server point to your IP address. You can host your own DNS server and have your registrar point your domain to your DNS server which points your domain to your webserver or use another DNS service. ZoneEdit.com is a free DNS service that can do this for you.
