Question

open Excel created in Office for Windows in Excel 2004

Hi all. Thank you for any help you can offer. I am one of those guys who have hair on the sides and back, but none on the top. This problem is about to make me rip the rest of my hair out.

EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE:
I have a Win7 (with all updates) machine running office. I don't know what version of Office I have on the Win7 machine (because the Win7 machine is exceptionally dead), but I bought the machine within the last couple of years, and got Office installed by the MFR when I bought it.

I used the Win7 machine to create an excel spreadsheet containing the usernames and passwords of many of my online accounts. I password-protected this file. I also had it auto-sync with my Dropbox.

KABOOM! Win7 laptop video died. Black screen. Have trouble-shot it, it's a hardware issue. I Don't have any money to repair it.

BUT, I'M A SMART FELLER, SO I KEEP MY OLD COMPUTER IN GREAT RUNNING SHAPE.

MacBook running OS 10.4.11. On this Mac I have Office 2004 with all its updates.

PROBLEM:
When I try to open the password-protected spreadsheet on the Mac, it says "This document may use advanced encryption that is not supported by Excel for the Mac. If this document was created with Excel for Windows, ask the author to open the file and then ..." and it gives instructions on how to use Office for Windows to change the Excel file to a Mac-friendly version.

ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE PROBLEM:
I have lookeed all over MS website and the rest of the Internet for a converter or reader. Nothin'. I don't have anything that would be built into Mac OS 10.4.x.

One person suggested I usse the Web-based Office, but that tells mme to open the spreadssheet from the Cloud. I have no access (that I can find) to the Cloud from my Office 2004, so I can't move the file up to the cloud from my mac and then open it with Web office. There is no option to open a file from my hard drive, only from the Cloud.

Open XML Converter says Unrecognized File.

I've searched extensively for a thhird-party tool, but no luck.

I like to sleuth oout these problems (former Windows/Mac desktop guy), but this one has me stumped, and I already mentioned about the hair pulling out.

THANKS!!

Explanation / Answer

In a nutshell I think you are SOL. Yees, Windows encryption is different from Mac. You probably used a much later windows version than the 2004 version of Excel. Therefore the Mac Excel 2004 just can't handle it. As far as I know there are nno conversion or any other options for Excel 2004. Your only hope is to get a friend or someone with a later version of Windows Excel to opeen it and save it in an unprotected format. Then you can probably open it on your 2004 Mac version...
