Question

Sorting dates

I received from a client an Outlook calendar in Excel format. The dates are scrambled. I want to sort from earliest to latest. Some of the dates show in the formula bar a single quotation mark at the beginning, but the single quotation mark does not show up in the data cell. When I sort, the dates with the single quotation mark are sorted separately from the ones without, resulting in more scrambled dates. What is the purpose of the hidden single quotation mark? Can it be removed to sort the dates accurately? Thanks

Explanation / Answer

1. CTRL+C a blank cell.

2. Select the column where dates are there.

3. Right Click > Paste Special > Add

4. Now, apostrophes will be removed.

5. Format the column as dates by selecting the column > Right Click > Format Cells
