Question

Hello:

I recently upgraded from XP to W7, and then reinstalled Office 2002 Pro from the original CD.

I also installed Office 2002 SP3 and the Compatibility pack.

Word and Powerpoint files (.doc, .docx, .ppt and .pptx) open without problems.

When I try opening Excel files (.xls or .xlsx), Excel hangs permanently.

I have extracted this error message text:

Explanation / Answer

Office 2002 is also known as OfficeXP and you posted to an Office 2003 group

Office 2002 is not fully compatible with win7 though most problems are with Outlook.

Not all winxp PC's can be upgraded to win7, if your PC maker or motherboard maker in the case of a generic desktop doesn't supply win7 specific drivers you cannot necessarily expect the system to function without problems, if at all.

Try clean booting the PC

Then repair your office installation, then start Excel itself and see if creating/saving a new workbook completes ok

If it does within Excel use File>Open to open an existing data file, which I assumed is located in your Libraries on the local drive.
