Question

I have a word document that is linked to an excel spreadsheet which is working fine. The issue I have is that when I try to merge a date from the excel spreadsheet is that when my spreadsheet is closed the date format appears the way I want it IE: Sunday, 21 September 2014. But when that spreadsheet is open and I do my mail merge the date appears as 41903

I tried to configure word with them following formula, it doesn't work

MERGEFIELD Effective_Date @ "dddd, MMMM dd, yyy";

my excel spreadsheet date format is as follow

Explanation / Answer

After you select the excel file to open, with the "confirm data source" box open, there is a small "show all" box on the lower left. If you check it, it opens the old list I'm used to seeing. The item I select which makes it work, is "MS Excel worksheets via DDE (*.xls)"
