Question

I am trying to copy a formula moving down a column in Excel with the formula maintaining the same sequence properties as the first two in the column. Example of first formula in the column, =A1+A1, example of the second formula in the column, =A2+A1, example of the third formula in the column, =A3+A1, etc.

When I highlight the first three rows of the noted formulas in the same column and attempt to copy/drag to rows continuing down the spreadsheet the formula nomenclature is not preserved. Instead, in row four the formula would read, =A4+A4 instead of what I would have expected on the PC version of Excel, =A4+A1.

There certainly must be an easy fixx, becaause no one woudld continue to type the formula nomenclature down multiple rows of a large spreadsheeet.

Any solutions would be very helpful.!!!

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

Excel for mac is not something I have ever used but see no reason why it shouldn't be the same as other versions of Excel, try this and drag down

=A1+$A$1

Note the $ signs lock the reference and make it absolute!
