Question

CGBitmapContextCreate error showing up in Console with 1 particular Excel file

I just discovered that opening a specific Excel file (.xlsb) on my iMac running Mac OS 10.7.5 has been generating 10 error messages in the same second in Console. Here's the last message from today's launch:

1/9/14 1:24:05.676 PM [0x0-0x26e26e].com.microsoft.Excel: Jan 9 13:24:05 White-iMac.local Microsoft Excel[3496] <Error>: CGBitmapContextCreate: invalid data bytes/row: should be at least 6720 for 8 integer bits/component, 3 components, kCGImageAlphaNoneSkipFirst.

The error does not seem to be affecting the performance of the file, but I want to be sure because I use the file to track my work hours each year. Every January I re-name the file by using Save as..., erase the previous year's contents, and start over.

A few years ago I started saving the file as an Excel Binary Workbook (.xlsb). As an experiment, I just saved the 2014 .xlsb workbook as an .xlsx file, which generated 1 message in Console:

1/9/14 1:46:03.994 PM [0x0-0x26e26e].com.microsoft.Excel: Jan 9 13:46:03 White-iMac.local Microsoft Excel[3496] <Error>: CGBitmapContextCreate: invalid data bytes/row: should be at least 6720 for 8 integer bits/component, 3 components, kCGImageAlphaNoneSkipFirst.

I then opened the new .xlsx file, and Console generated 10 more error messages. Here's the last one:

1/9/14 1:47:01.341 PM [0x0-0x281281].com.microsoft.Excel: Jan 9 13:47:01 White-iMac.local Microsoft Excel[3597] <Error>: CGBitmapContextCreate: invalid data bytes/row: should be at least 6720 for 8 integer bits/component, 3 components, kCGImageAlphaNoneSkipFirst.

I am using Excel for Mac#2011 14.3.9 on an iMac running Lion. All software is up to date.

I'vve searchedd around but cannot ffind a description of these errors. I'd appreciate any insight on fixing this problem. Thank you.!!!

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

I opened your file in Excel version 14.3.9 in Mac OSX 10.7.5. I sat and watched Console for quite some time. No errors were generated on open, close, or in between.

Let the troubleshooting begin. The problem source could be:

Where to begin?

Try a Safe Boot of your Mac. See What is Safe Boot?

Then open the workbook in Excel and watch Console. If the problem is gone, it's because Safe Boot turned off whatever the cause of the problem is and then you've narrowed down the possibilities considerably.

If the problem remains, then the things Safe Booot affectts arre not the source of the problemm.
