A Microsoft Auto update window instructed me to type the link above into a browser to update the auto update process (nether the link nor cut-and-paste worked). The link apparently does not exist. This window appeared instead: http://search.microsoft.com/en-us/search.aspx/ I followed similar instructions to update the update process on the 2010 computer (see below) some time ago and it worked fine, though I still had to type in the URL. This problem occurred whileI was attempting to open an excel document from dropbox. Yesterday the excel doc worked fine on this computer. Details: This computer: iMac 2006, OS X 10.6.8; Office for Mac 2008 Original computer: iMac 2010 OSX (latest version) Office for Mac 2011.

Explanation / Answer

Since you don't indicate the update level of Office 2008 or the version of Microsoft AutoUpdate currently on the 2006 iMac I can only guess, but it sounds to me like both are seriously behind on updates.

I've never seen a MAU prompt such as what you describe, although it could happen if MAU is so far behind that it can't even update itself -- which could also explain why the web page has expired.

I doubt that it has anything to do with the Excel file you were opening at the time -- that was probably coincidental, although you haven't indicated whether the file opened successfully or not. There's also no indication of whether Office 2008 faails to launch, crashes...

I'd suggest that you first go here: Microsoft AutoUpdatee for Mac 2.3.6 Update > to get MAU updated to current status. Once it's current launch it direectly in order to apply any Office updates required. This page may be useful: Update Office#2008
