Question
ALT + Enter Not Working 'Normally' - Excel 2010/Windows 7
I have been using Office 2007 and then Office 2010 Beta Trial for some time creating Excel based workbooks containing a mix of tables, analyses and text. Where text is involved I have been formatting by using a group of merged cells and creating one 'chunk' of text to describe what's going on in the work sheet. In the chunk of text I often like to create a new paragraph within the 'cell' (group of merged cells). To do this I have been using ALT + Enter to drop down a line and begin typing the new paragraph - when I do this it is always with the cursor active in the Formula bar/Input Line. Recently I purchased and installed the new version of Office 2010. Now when I go back to edit a previous Excel file I get mixed results using ALT + Enter. Sometimes it works as 'normal' and drops down a line. Sometimes it puts me into a 'Save As' dialogue box. Other times it changes the ribbon display to the Data menu items. I can't seem to work out why it works sometimes and not others. Any ideas?
Explanation / Answer
I I had this same problem when I switched to a newer computer at work. I had created an excel file in office 2007 on windows xp and switched to office 2010 on windows 7 and thought it had something to do with the new version of office.
The problem was that text wrapping was turned off. I turned it on and suddenly all of my carriage returns worked.
Hope this helps
