Question

Excel Autofill Count Bug - Q197, Q198, Q199, Q100, Q101

Don't know if I'm the only person experiencing this, but when I autofill a series of cells with text that starts as "Q1" trying to autofill to "Q1000" using the autofill mouse dragging (don't know what it's called) it gets to Q199 and then instead of filling in with Q200 it returns to Q100 and counts to Q199 again and then repeats the same Q100 behavior.

Thus I have a series of 200 cells filled with Q1>Q199 and then 8 series of Q101>Q199 to get to my 1000 cells.

Is this a known bug?

Explanation / Answer

If you are starting in row 1 then use this formula

="Q"&ROW()

and copy down

You can then copy the column and paste over itself as Values.

Option 2

Type Q0001

and copy down.

Autofill works by guessing the series you are trying. I got Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 repeated when I tried in Excel 2007.

Type Q1

drag it down to Q4

Enter Q5 in the next row

Select Q1 to Q5 and then drag the Auto Fill handle down...

If I start with Q150, I get the following;

Q150 Q250 Q350 Q450 Q151 Q251 Q351 Q451 Q152 Q252 Q352
