Question
Subtracting time(hh,mm,ss)....
Hi all.
I'm working on establishing a worksheet for the work that I do, and in toying around with some equations, I wanted to subtract an end time from a start time to determine the total time worked for a specific project.
So far, I've done the following, and it gives me an answer that I was not expecting.
=(TIME(10,33,0)-TIME(9,42,0))
the result is 0.035......
Or 12:51 am.
I was expecting 0.85
I've just tried time value, and I get a similar result.
=timevalue("10:33 am") - timevalue("9:42 am")
with a result of
0.035.......
Is there a way to set up an equation that will allow me to subtract a finish time from a start time to get a total hours worked?
I vaguely remember seeing this a long time ago, but now I can't remember how to do this.
Thank you in advance.
Explanation / Answer
%@#^#
Excel treats dates as 1 for every day past Dec 31, 1899. Time is a decimal portion of a day. Today happens to be 41,878 and today at noon would be 41,878.5. The 0.85 that you are looking for is 0.85 of an hour not a day. The difference between the two is 0.035 of a day.,/
If you want the proportion of an hour, multiply by 24 (e.g. the number of hours in a day).
0.035
