Question
Occasionally I have to update documents with the same name that are located in different directories. I need to be able to determine which document is the current view.
The path and file name appear at the top of the Word 2007 window, however the space is so small that only the first portion of the path is shown. Since the document all reside in the same general area, and are separated into dated sub folders (e.g. "121015"), it is difficult to tell which document is currently in view.
Currently, the only way I can tell which document is in view is to go to "File > Save As," and look up the path. There must be a better way to do this.
Is there a way to view the entire path and file name of an open document?
Explanation / Answer
Create a macro with the command
MsgBox ActiveDocument.FullName
and assign it to the Quick Access Toolbar. When you run it, it will display the drivepathilename of the active document.
And here are two more alternatives:
1. Click Office button > Prepare > Properties. The full path appears in the Location box in the upper right (and if even that isn't wide enough, hover the mouse cursor over it to see the popup).
2. Click Office button > Word Options > Customize. Set "Choose commands from" to Commands Not In the Ribbon. Click on the Document Location entry in the list, and click the Add button between the lists. That puts a Location box on the Quick Access Toolbar. It won't be very wide, but you can click in it and then use the arrow keys to scroll it right and left.
