Question
Screening efforts for any health care problem can be undertaken at various levels. They can be applied routinely to everyone, or they can be targeted, administered only to those in higher-risk groups. Broad-based screening efforts, meaning routine use of a screening tool in a range of settings, is desirable when the condition is common. The substance abuse fields is increasingly using standardized instruments to promote treatment planning as well as to provide a yardstick for measuring treatment effectiveness. The most widely used tool for both of these purposes is the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). Discuss: 1. Assess the serious consequences when there is a failure to treat. 2. Discuss two screening tests that are effective in identifying those with a high likelihood of having an alcohol problem. Then which of the two would you prefer, explain why? 3. Compare and contrast the following screening instruments: AUDIT, CAGE, TWEAK, short MAST. 4. Compare and contrast the following assessment instruments: ASI and SASSI. 5. Locate a website that provides assessment instruments. What is your opinion of this website?
Explanation / Answer
AUDIT Test stands for the alcohol use disorders identification test. This test requires the candidates to fill a questionnaire that investigates the individual’s proneness towards substance abuse. However it is a bit time consuming
FAST test is based on Audit Test. FAST stands for fast alcohol screening test. It is relatively fats than the other tests
I would prefer to use FAST test for identifying the substance abuse as the test is easy and fast to administer and has high sensitivity and specificity.
3. AUDIT i.e. alcohol use disorders identification test was developed by WHO to identify drinking disorders. It is a 10-question test. This test demonstrates high sensitivity towards heavy drinkers.
CAGE is a 4-question instrument used usually in clinics to identify people who are habitual drinkers. This questionnaire is used to determine various health-related behaviors.
TWEAK is a new substance abuse screening instrument, which is used to determine the risk level of drinking in pregnant women. It is a 5-question test.
MAST is Michigan Alcoholism screening test, which is prevalent in both nonclinical as well as clinical setting. It is a 10-question test.
4. ASI is Addiction Severity Index Test. It is an interview test, mostly semi-structured, used for substance abuse evaluations. This test is a pretty long procedure, with a total 161 questions.
SASSI is substance abuse subtle screening inventory. This is a relatively quick test, which mainly consists of MCQs. It is used for determining the likelihood of someone having substance abuse affinity.
