Explanation / Answer

Why is an understanding of emotional intelligence important in achieving high performance in a team?

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and control your own emotions and other’s emotions as well. There are three skills in EI namely- emotional awareness, ability to harness emotions for thinking and problem solving and the ability to manage emotions.

EI plays a critical role in the teams. The success of a team is obtained when there is team cooperation and commitment to goals. Three conditions are essential for a success of a team namely

The author states that the absence of any of these three conditions would result in emotional disturbance among the team members. It is not only sufficient to have emotionally intelligent team members in a team for high performance, but there should be an emotional atmosphere in which the norms build the emotional capacity.

The author also states that a group must have self awareness and self –management among the team members for effective functioning of the teams. The group must have an awareness of the emotions of their members and other groups or individuals outside its boundaries. Emotional incompetency at any of these areas would result in team’s dysfunction.

What do the authors propose for creating and sustaining a good emotional intelligence environment in a team?

The authors propose that small acts make a big difference for building EI and sustaining them. Saying a Thank you note to a hardworking team member builds EI; asking a silent member for his/her thoughts and opinions would create EI; Treating others with respect, acknowledging when the harmony is false and when the tension is unexpressed are all ways to create and sustain EI environment in a team.
