Question

: A 100BaseTX LAN with 30 stations that are a total of 40 meters apartThe packet size is 400 bits The propagations speed is 50 meters per microsecond .The time to shift in the packet to the NIC is equal to time to shift the packet on the cable

. A. How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet from station 1 to station 2?

B. How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet from station 1 to station 15?

C. How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet on average?

D. What would the average time to broadcast be if you upgraded to gigabit Ethernet? Assume the total distance between stations is 30 meters.

Explanation / Answer

100BaseTX Lan suuports transmission speed of upto 100mb/s.

A) How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet from station 1 to station 2?

1)since, stations are 40 metres apart,so time taken to transfer 1 packet=(propagation time from NIC to cable+propagation time from one station to another).

2)since propagation time from NIC to cable is equal to propagation time from one station to another.

3)hence,total time taken to transfer a packet from one station to another=2ms.

4)hence time taken to broadcast from station 1 to station 2=2ms.

B) How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet from station 1 to station 15?

1)time taken to broadcast from one station to another is same for each station.

2)hence,total time taken to broadcast from station1 to station 15=(15-1)*2ms=14*2ms=28ms.

C) How long does it take to broadcast 1 packet on average?

1)since time taken to broadcast for each station is same.

2)hence,average time =2ms.

D) What would the average time to broadcast be if you upgraded to gigabit Ethernet? Assume the total distance between stations is 30 meters.

1)gigabit ethernet gives a theoretical throughput of 1000mb/s.

2)but,since number of packets transferred is same for both 100BaseT LAN and gigabit ethernet, hence average time is also same.

3)hence average time=2ms.
