Question
Several states have now legalized the use of recreational marijuana, paving the way for the growth of legal marijuana dispensaries. Let's say that within a state, legal dispensaries look very similar to each other in terms of their size (number of employees), and their structure (number of positions/divisions) in the organization.
1.) Explain what resource dependence theory would say about why new dispensaries look very similar to each other. Contrast that with what neo/institutional theory would say about why new dispensaries look like each other?
Explanation / Answer
Hi,
Thanks for the question.
The resource dependence theory says that the organization is dependent on the resources in order to run their business. Since all the new dispensaries have the same basic resource i.e. marijuana, they all look and function the same.
The neo/institutional theory is the theory that basically tells about how the organization is affecting the society at large. Both theories target the different set of parameters in order to make the connection. One is into the resources and second the impact it is having on the society.
