Following are the major advantages provided by Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing.
1. Due to advancement in sector of information technology and readily available internet capable devices there has been a explosion in consumer demand for bandwidth. Instead of laying new fiber cable to cater for this demand DWDM increases the capacity of embedded fiber by assigning incoming signal to specific wavelength and then multiplexing it on to one fiber.
2. DWDM enables the same optical fiber to carry signals of different formats (ATM, SONET, IP) and different rate while maintaining the system performance, reliability and robustness
3. DWDM provides a capability of partitioning and maintaining different dedicated wavelength for different customers eg. Service provider can lease individual wavelength to their high use business customers as opposed to dedicating entire cable.
4. DWDM provides with larger distance between the network elements using fewer regenerators in long distance networks. Also since multiple wavelength (say 16)are carried in same fiber this decreases the number of amplifier (in this case by factor of 16)
5. DWDM caters for easy expansion of current network infrastructure

Incremental Growth means to gradually evolve the network capacity to cater for ever increasing bandwitdh demand. DWM infrastructure is fully capable of delivering the necessary capacity expansion and it is best to lay the foundation of network based on this technology.
Incremental growth is important because this decreases the initial costs of the network infrastructure laid by the service providers. Also the infrastructure would serve them for longer time. for eg. OC-48 with 8 or 16 channels per fiber may sound overkill now however such measures need to be taken so that the system is efficient even two years from now.
