Fill in the Blank Questions: (1 pt. each question) Write the answer that completes each sentence. 10. is rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true 11. A process is operating in statistical control if variation are present. 12. When using and R control charts, the X chart monitors the process and the R monitors the process 13. Two of the elements that have to be specified when designing control charts are and describe how well the X and R 14. The charts can detect process shifts Short Answer Questions: (3 pts. each question) Answer each question with a brief but complete statement. 15. Explain one of the reasons for the popularity of Control Charts 16. Explain the meaning of the Average Run Length (ARL)

Explanation / Answer

10) Type 1 Error is rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true. Probability of making type 1 error is alpha which the level of significance one sets for hypothesis test. An alpha of 0.04 means that you are willing to accept chance of 4% that you are wrong when you reject null hypothesis.

11) A process is operating in statistical control if all special causes of variation are removed and only common cause variation is present

12) When using X and R control charts, the X chart monitors the process mean and R chart monitors the process standard deviation

13) The two elements that have to be specified while designing control charts are Mean and Control limits. In a process output, mean is the average expected value. Each control chart has Lower control limit (LCL) and Upper control limit to determine whether process is in-control or out-of-control.
