1.a) Quality gives a competitive advantage. It also provides brand recognition and customer satisfaction as the customer expectation of a particular product is associated with quality. Improving the quality reduces the cost of rework, failure(Internal, external) and there is less scrap.Improving the quality will increase the cost so companies have to decide the level of quality they want to maintain for the quality of their product/service.

b)The total quality management(TQM) is a management approach to achieve long term success by satisfying their customers. In TQM approach, all the employees and management of the company put their continuous effort in improving processes, services, product and work environment. The 6 basic concepts of TQM are: i)Committed management which is always involved to provide long term organizational support to the employees
ii) Constant focus on customer
iii)Effective involvement and utilization of human resource
iv)Continuous improvement of the processes
v)Treating suppliers as partners
vi)Performance measurement tools to be in place to measure process performance

2. The tools of process analysis and design are:

i) Flow chart: A flow chart is a pictorial step by step representation of a process. There are flowchart symbols that contains a short description of the process step. These symbols are connected with arrows representing the process flow direction
ii) Time function mapping: It is a special model for deployment flowcharts where is is on the horizontal axis. The objective of time function mapping is to identify waste generated during the process and eliminate them.
iii)Process Charts: The process charts are used to record the essential features of a work situation for analysis. There are two types of process chart, outline process chart and flow process chart. It can be used for micro as well as macro processes
iv) Value stream mapping: A value stream is all the steps required to take a product or service from its raw material state to the customer. The steps included both value added and non value added.
v) Service Blueprinting: It is a visual process analysis technique that focus on the customer and the firm interaction with the customer depicting the contact points between the customer and the firm. It is based on the separation of the service into individual processes

3.a)ERP is a business automation software, a one stop solution for all needs of the organization. It can manage billing, CRM, supply chain, finance and all other aspect of an enterprise and most importantly the live relationship between these enterprise functions and improves productivity

Advantages of ERP are:

i)Better organizational control and collaboration

ii)Improved communication, internal as well as external

iii)Improved decision making within the company

iv)Automatic and coherent workflow from one function to another, to enable a smooth and quicker completion of a process

v)ERP is a modular software system hence a few modules or many modules can be implemented depending on the need of the firm.

The disadvantages of ERP are:

i) Huge implementation and maintenance cost. In order to use the system efficiently, it is important to train all the staff. It is a huge cost for the company in terms of money, time and effort

ii)ERP developments are time consuming. The projects may take 1-4 years or more to be fully functional

iii)Cost savings are not realized immediately after implementation and it is difficult to measure the same

iv)Once implemented, it is subject to single vendor lock-in for further upgrades hence many not be able to negotiate effectively

v)Proper evaluation must be done prior to ERP implementation otherwise it might become a failure
