A company makes use of a computerised flat file information storage and retrieval
system. The company is experiencing problems due to the use of this flat file system
and decides to convert to relational database systems.
Currently, there are three files in use: customer, stock and orders. Examples from
the three files are shown below. During conversion to a relational database system,
these files would need to be normalised into relations. Normalise these files up to
third normal form.
You may show your process. But there should be a clear section at the
end just for your final relation schemas for the entire database.
Note: In the normalization process, the data should be carefully studied to figure out
the functional dependencies. If something is unclear, DB designer should consult with
the customer. For this assignment, think about the functional dependencies (FDs)
based on keys. Do not make unreasonable assumptions about FDs. For example,
City -> PostCode is an example of unreasonable assumption.
