Question
A part time payroll clerk, Kay, had been employed with a mid-size organization (250 employees) for three years. Her formance evaluations had been excellent, and she had received holiday bonuses (unusual for part time employees) for the t two years. She reported to the VP of Human Resources. The Controller, to whom the VP of HR reported, decided to expand the payroll clerk job to full time. The increased position was offered to Kay. She was told that if she did not accept the new role, she would be terminated despite the HR VP's objections. Kay declined as she only wanted to work part time because she wanted to spend time with her grandchildren. She expressed her desire to remain with the organization and pointed out that she had originally accepted the position due to its part time status. Kay was terminated If you were the Controllers boss, what concerns would you voice before the decision was implemented?Explanation / Answer
If I were Controller's boss then I would suggest him to keep Kay in the company. She has been an excellent resource for the company and her performance over the past few years has been great. The company will not lose anything by hiring her as a part-time employee. She is old and it is understandable that she wants to give time to her family and the company needs to respect this. So I would ask the controller to provide her more flexibility with respect to work and retain her with the company. If she is happy working with us then it will only increase the productivity than causing any harm to the business. I would instead ask the controller to increase her salary slightly and request her to increase the working hours by one hour maybe. She would have considered that rather than getting a full-time job offer. It is never good to let go of good resources from a company. A company should have a good retention policy to make the employees feel valued and important.
