Question

Write an analysis and evaluation of the following article “Ocean warning” ( Need 600 words please).

The ocean plays a crucial role in Earth’s climate system by absorbing solar radiation and transporting heat from warmer to cooler areas. • Recent observations show that more heat is entering Earth’s atmosphere than is leaving it. However, the ocean only absorbs about 93% of this excess heat. • Ocean temperatures are measured by small robotic Argo proling oats and Earth-orbiting satellites. • An important result from temperature data is that the ocean has warmed, but the spatial distribution of heat content change is strongly nonuniform. • As the ocean warms, it expands and the sea level rises. Sea-level rise is one of the best-measured indicators of global warming. Ocean warming also has negative effects on the uptake of CO2. Because the Earth is a sphere, there is a net heat gain near the Equator and a net heat loss at high latitudes. Atmospheric winds and oceanic currents must balance these heat surpluses and deficits by transporting heat from low to high latitudes. The ocean contributes about a quarter of the overall poleward heat transport accomplished by the atmosphere-ocean system; however, because the heat capacity and density of seawater are much greater than those of air (water can absorb more than 4000 times as much heat per unit volume as air), changes in oceanic heat content have profound and long-lasting effects on global and regional climate.m the atmosphere, and on the availability of oxygen for marine life.

Explanation / Answer

Ocean Warming is an effect of Global warming. So let’s discuss the bigger picture as well.

Global Warming is a key word which is a major concern across the globe when it comes to environmental issues. Global warming is the climate change & change in earth’s temperature over the past few years & it is continuously accelerating. This climate change & increase in temperatures is affection different regions in different type. The most common effects is observed in sea level is rising; deserted areas are expanding, heavy & uncertain rainfall with floods, melting glaciers, Oceans acidification etc & because of change in nature, all related flora & fauna are near extinction & most of them are endangered by now.

A recent example is severe drought has been observed in Cape Town (South Africa). The basic reason is due to shortage of rainfall in the regions. This was predicted atleast a decade ago, but nothing happened since then & now drought has to be faced.

As stated above global warming is the temperature change on earth’s surface, ocean & other water bodies plays a major role in controlling the temperature. The temperature rise in ocean (water bodies) is termed as ocean warming.

As per studies the 90% of heat of earth/environment is taken by water bodies due to the fact that heat travels from hotter areas to cooler areas. As we all know water has a high heat capacity because of this the heat of the earth is mostly taken by water bodies. Since the major portion of earth is covered with water, the amount of heat building up is being accelerated at extremely high rates.

Greenhouse effect:- We all use refrigerators, Air conditioners, & other daily products which release CO2 &other greenhouse gasses. It has been observed in studies that it took long many years to change the climate of earth & major reason is the amount of heat entering earth is trapped & not leaving the earth. These gasses present in atmosphere traps the heat/additional energy & does not let it go. This is reason why temperature is rising.

Ocean warming is spatial. By saying that we mean that heat is distributed in different levels of the ocean. Upper parts of ocean take extra heat in comparison to lower bed of ocean. As per study conducted almost ¾ part is absorbed by upper & left over 1/4th is covered by lower ocean bed. Oceans are deep & they are absorbing heat & will act as reservoirs of heat in coming years.

Sea level rising:- As ocean/water becomes hot, it starts rising & expanding & hence sea level rises leading to high tides, floods in coastlines. The flora & fauna has been severely affected & extinction can be observed for many water animals.
