Quadrant I will serve Qualcomm’s needs in the ultra-competitive environment of the technological industries the firm is fully engaged. In Quadrant I, Market development is the infusion of taking existing products and attempting to sell them within new markets and product development is the creation of new products to serve existing markets (Strategic Management, 2014h, Selecting Corporate-Level Strategies, p. 242-243). Qualcomm uses both of these approaches in not only being a member of the semiconductor industry but also a prominent player in the wireless, communications and various other technological industries.
The existing market of consumers’ insatiable need for wireless software and digital capabilities, renders Qualcomm the competitive edge it currently garners. Companies with this type of competitive maxims, adheres to product and market development, and market penetration strategies which organizations of this kind have resources that can allow it to create horizontal, backward and forward strategies (MBA-Lectures, 2010). Qualcomm has a marketing approach that consists of public relations, advertising, digital marketing and social media; technical conferences and trade shows; Corporate Marketing department provides information to industry analysts and media (Qualcomm, 2018). Qualcomm’s chip technology is imperative to the development of U.S. smartphone communications infrastructure and other digital devices (Bomey, 2018).
As a matter of fact, the company is critical to certain aspects of the U.S. national security and as of March 14th, has been at the center of a hostile takeover by Broadcom Limited with an offer of $117 billion. However, the offer has been rejected by the Trump administration because it would grant a great deal of power to Broadcom Limited, which is an Asian owned entity (Bomey, 2018). The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States were concerned that Qualcomm would be purchased by an Asian controlled company [Broadcom Limited] which could be influenced by China. In their view, this could create national security concerns.
