These chips are incorporated into analog devices that are then encased in epoxy. The yield is not particularly good for LSI manufacture, so the AQL specified by that department is 6% while the LTPD acceptable by the assembly department is 39%. Assume the company is willing to accept a consumers risk of 10 percent and a producer's risk of 5 percent. Use Exhibit 10.16, a. Find the sample size. (Round up your answer to the next whole number.) Sample size b. How would you tell someone to do the test? Randomly sample LSI using the sample size from part a, (cick to select) the lot if more than defective. Answer to problem 10-22 :
Given are following data :
Upper specification limit of the machine = USL = 5.09 inches
Lower Specification limit of the machine = LSL = 5 – 0.09 = 4.91 inches
Sample mean = m = 5.001 inches
Standard deviation = S =0.03 inches
Cpk for this machine
= Minimum (( USL – m ) / 3 xSd, ( m – LSL) /3 xSd )
= Minimum ( ( 5.09 – 5.001)/3 x 0.03 , ( 5.001 – 4.91 )/ 3 x 0.03)
= Minimum ( 0.988, 1.011)
= 0.988
Cpk = 0.988
Answer to problem 10-19 :
Current production rate = 18 units/ hour
Current inspection rate = 18 units / hour
Current defect rate = 0.04 ( proportion ) of 18 units / hour = 0.72 units/ hour
Replacement cost of defective unit = $22 / unit
Therefore , current hourly cost of defect = Current defect rate/ hour x Replacement cost of defective unit = $22 x 0.72 =$15.84
COST PER HOUR = $15.84
Since amount paid to inspector ( $9 ) per hour < Current hourly cost of defect ( $15.84) , it is worthwhile to establish an inspection station
SHOULD AN INSPECTION STATION BE ESTABLISHED TO TEST ALL UNTS BASED ON COST ALONE : YES
Once inspection station is added, cost to inspect each unit
= Hourly fee paid to inspector / Quantity produced per hour
= $0.50
COST TO INSPECT = $0.50 PER UNIT
Benefit from establishing inspection process per unit
= ( Hourly cost of defect – Hourly cost of inspection ) / Quantity produced per hour
= ( $15.84 - $9 ) / 18
= $0.38 per unit
BENEFIT = $0.38 PER UNIT
Cpk = 0.988
