Fever is the elevation of body temperature due to Prostaglandin E2acting on the hypothalamus. Prostaglandin E2 is synthesized by theenzyme cyclooxygenase-2 and the expression of this enzyme isinduced by cytokines ( TNF-alpha, IL-1Beta, IL-6) produced bymacrophages. Because macrophages are part of the first line ofdefense, the innate immune response, fever is considered part ofthe innate immune response and occurs before adaptive immunity. Fever is beneficial because at high body temperature many pathogensdo not grow/proliferate as well and the immune response is moreintense at higher temperatures and operates more efficiently.
