TOPIC:
A study on the 'Effectiveness of Educating Problem Solving and Decision making Skills on Mental health and Resilience of Female University Students' by Mojtaba Amiri Majd
Objective:
The objective of the study was to find out the effectiveness of educating 'Problem solving and Decision making' in improving the mental health and resilience in the female university students.
Methodology:
The study was conducted on 30 students who were selected by convenient sampling and were randomly assingned to the Experimental group and Control group . A pre-test and a post-test was conducted on both the groups to determine the effectives of the treatment. The treatment involved 7 sessions of education program on problem solving and decision making, with each session lasting for 2 hours. The effectiveness of the treatment was found by comparing the results of the pre-test to that of the post-test results.
Findings:
The results showed that the education program in problem solving and decision making has improved the mental health and resilience of the subjects.
From the above study, it was found that the students were able to handle their situations better because they were given education about problem solving and decision making processes. Thus, when individuals analyse their problem carefully and think rationally about it, they would be able to come up with appropriate solutions in overcoming their problems.
The process of Problem solving includes:
Identification of the problem, Determing the reason behind the problem, Finding out the possible solutions, Evaluating the solutions, Selecting the best solution, Implementing the solution, and following up the effectiveness of the solution.
The process of Decision making:
Identify the situation for which a decision has to be made, Gather required informations, Find out possible decisions, Evaluate the positives and negatives of each decison, Choose the best option, Implement the decision and analyse its consequences.
The strength of the study is that, it had proved that when individuals are provided with education in problem solving and decision making skills, they would be able to handle their problematic situations better and would also have improved mental well being and resiliency.
The limitation of the study is that, it was conducted on a small group of subjects and these subjects were only female students.
